One of the biggest challenges when using positive displacement pumps are pressure variations on the discharge side. Depending on the operating principle, these effects are more or less significant, but always present. This often poses a challenge for end-users. These pulsations can not only be harmful to the pumped medium but also place a particularly heavy load on the installed equipment.
Depending on the intensity, this can lead to knocking noises or vibrations of pipes and hoses. These pulsations are particularly detrimental to sensors further down the line, such as pressure gauges or flowmeters. It also complicates repeatable dosing and filling processes.

Tapflo DT Active Pulsation Dampener

With the DT pulsation dampener, we can offer suitable solutions for the problems mentioned above. These dampeners, optimized for use with Tapflo air-operated diaphragm pumps, are the most effective and simplest way to eliminate pressure variations on the pump’s discharge side.
Thanks to the “in-line” design, the liquid can be pumped without additional pressure losses, shear impacts, or product degradation. This is a decisive advantage, especially for shear-sensitive liquids, viscous liquids, or liquids with a high concentration of solids. It should also be noted that smaller pressure fluctuations reduce pressure losses in the pipeline, thereby increasing pumping efficiency.

“Active pulsation dampener” – the Tapflo pulsation dampener actively works with the pulsating flow of the pumped liquid. By supplying compressed air, which is taken from the pump’s air inlet, the pulsation dampener maintains the same pressure as the pump. If the pressure in the pipeline drops between pump strokes, the dampener provides additional pressure for the pumped liquid. This reduces or prevents pulsation. Furthermore, the pulsation dampener automatically adjusts to changing pumping conditions or pumped media.

Materials and Applications

Maintenance-free pulsation dampeners are manufactured by Tapflo from PE and PTFE plastics, as well as stainless steel, polished stainless steel, and aluminum. High-performance diaphragms made of PTFE, EPDM, NBR, and others are characterized by a particularly long service life due to their layered construction and integrated metal core. For particularly demanding applications, the pulsation dampener can also be equipped with a double diaphragm system with a barrier fluid chamber for monitoring the diaphragm condition. Pulsation dampeners are also available in sanitary and high-pressure versions. Compliance with the requirements of ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU complements the range of applications for the pulsation dampener and extends it to almost all industrial application areas.

Food, Pharmaceuticals, and Cosmetics

Tapflo pulsation dampeners from the hygienic series are used in many areas of the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Naturally, we comply with all required European and international standards, such as EN 10204, FDA, EC 1935/2004, EC10/2011, and USP VI.

The dead-space-free design of our pulsation dampener is easy to clean in CIP and SIP systems and self-draining when installed vertically. This leaves no room for product residue and bacterial growth. The dampener can be equipped with a wide range of sanitary and aseptic connections, such as tri-clamp, DIN 11851, or DIN 11864.

The pulsation dampener can also be used with electric pumps with strong pulsations, such as peristaltic pumps, piston pumps, and all other pulsating pumps.

Particularly practical and space-saving are the integrated pulsation dampeners from the “top-mounted” and TK series. In these cases, the pulsation dampener is already mounted on the pump.
