The Salvatore Robuschi Cantilever pump is a vertical pump with a closed, vortex or channel impeller. It allows pumping liquids with solid content (including abrasive) without the need for external lubrication. The lack of seals in contact with the liquid allows operation at temperatures up to 500°C and dry running without damage, and the pump fills automatically when the liquid covers the impeller. The use of a suction pipe allows emptying tanks with a depth of up to 5 meters. Cantilever series pumps also have low maintenance costs, which quickly compensate for the higher initial price.

Cantilever pumps are used for sludge, suspensions and liquids containing large or long solids. They are designed for transfer between tanks, in food processing, irrigation, pumping heavy oil, oil sands and shale, for paper pulp and wastewater transport.

Product features

The Cantilever series vertical pump is a vertical pump with a non-clogging recessed impeller (RBC), vortex (RCC) or closed (RDC) impeller. The pump casing is submerged in the liquid, and the motor is mounted above the mounting plate, outside the medium area. The oversized ball bearing with a lubricator located above the mounting plate is not exposed to the corrosive environment. This means that no bearing is located in the liquid, there is no seal or bearing housing, and the bearing assembly is sealed to prevent contamination by liquids or gases and vapors.

The pumped medium temperature can exceed 500°C. This allows the pump to run dry without risk of damage, and thus reliable operation and cost reduction. An additional advantage of Cantilever pumps is that the pump can operate without level control, as it starts automatically when the liquid covers the impeller. The suction pipe allows for emptying tanks up to 5 meters deep.

It is possible to customize the shape and dimensions of the mounting plate, the position of the discharge flange, and the length of the column according to customer requirements to fit the pump to the existing installation. A suction filter and suction extension are optionally available, as well as the possibility of mounting a PTFE lip seal for a vapor-proof design.

Cantilever pumps are used for slurries, suspensions, and liquids containing large or long solids. They are also used in sewage wells, oily water wells, for transfer between tanks, in food processing, in groundwater management and irrigation, for pumping heavy oil, oil sands and shale, for paper pulp, sewage transport, and shower pumps.

  • Versatility – the ability to choose from three impeller types, customize the shape and size of the mounting plate, the position of the discharge flange, and the length of the column, the possibility of mounting outside the tank.
  • Motor without contact with the pumped liquid – only the pump casing is submerged in the liquid; the motor is mounted above the mounting plate, which separates it from the pumped medium.
  • Wide range of applications – refining and mining industry, food, paper, agriculture, sewage transport, liquid transfer between tanks.
Operation principle

The principle of operation of centrifugal pumps. The two main parts of a centrifugal pump are the impeller with vanes (vane impeller) and the pump casing (body). In the most common type – a centrifugal pump with a volute casing – the liquid enters the pump near the center of the high-speed rotating impeller. The liquid on the suction side moves along the impeller axis and due to the centrifugal force generated by the vanes, it is thrown radially towards the chamber in the casing. The casing gradually expands spirally towards the discharge nozzle, which reduces the liquid velocity and thus increases the pressure (diffuser effect). At the same time, as the liquid is thrown radially by the impeller due to centrifugal force, the pressure in the center of the impeller drops, enhancing the suction effect of the liquid into the pump, which enables a continuous liquid transfer process.

The impeller of the centrifugal pump is driven by a motor (usually electric) through a shaft. The pump head, together with the coupling and motor, constitutes the pump unit. In centrifugal pumps, gears are not used, and the rotational speed of the motor is transmitted directly. Two- and four-pole motors are most commonly used (rotational speeds of approximately 2900 and 1450 rpm, respectively), while six- and eight-pole motors are less frequently used (approximately 900 and 700 rpm).

A very important element of the pump is the seal at the point where the drive shaft enters the casing. This seal is designed to prevent leakage of the pumped liquid to the outside of the pump, maintain pressure inside the pump, and prevent air from entering the pump. Among the seals of centrifugal pumps, we can distinguish gland packing packing, single and double mechanical seals. There is also a special type of pump – sealless (hermetic) pumps.

The pump is installed on top of the tank and operates without a liquid level sensor. The pump will start pumping when the liquid level is above the pump casing. If the liquid level is below the suction port, the pump will not be primed, resulting in dry running. Due to the lack of bearings or seals, this pump can run dry without the risk of damage. The pump is installed on top of the tank and operates without a liquid level sensor. The pump will start pumping when the liquid level is above the pump casing. If, after filling the pump, the liquid level drops below the pump head level, the extension allows the pump to empty the tank to the end of the extension. Then dry running will occur. The pump will refill when the liquid level is above the pump casing. This solution allows the tank to be emptied to a depth of 5 m below the suction port, however, a detailed check of the Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa) is recommended to avoid cavitation problems. The pump is installed outside the tank and operates unattended. The pump can operate when the liquid level in the tank is above the pump casing. If the liquid level is below the suction port, the pump will not be primed and dry running will occur. The medium return port from the pump column must be above the liquid level. This solution allows operation with high-temperature liquids (up to 300°C or up to 400°C in a special version) and with contaminants.
Impeller types

Closed impeller

Clean liquids or containing a small percentage of suspension. Allows for low NPSH and high pumping efficiency.

Vortex impeller

Crystallizing suspensions, viscous liquids, high fiber content, sewage. Thanks to the completely recessed impeller, free passage in the pump up to 180 mm. Most of the liquid flows through the pump without directly touching the impeller. Passage of solid particles up to 90% of the outlet diameter. This allows any liquid to be transported without clogging the pump.

Channel impeller

Non-aggressive wastewater or lightly contaminated liquids containing non-fibrous suspensions. Impeller with special geometry to obtain low NPSHr and large free passage.
