They can be installed horizontally and vertically, also with reversed flow direction. They are characterized by a robust design and good self-priming properties, have a wide selection of shaft seals – packing seal in 3 versions and single or double mechanical seal. TopGear L series gear pumps can operate in ATEX explosion hazard zones.

SPX Johnson TG L gear pumps are designed for pumping, among others: animal feed, bitumen, coolant, fats, inks, isocyanates, molasses, oils, paints, polymers, resins, syrups in the chemical, bitumen, petrochemical, machinery and animal feed industries.

Product features

The TopGear (TG) series combines robust construction with small or large clearances and a unique tooth profile on the active gear. The TG L series pumps are compact internal gear pumps, making them suitable for use in confined workspaces.

Mounted on a flange or bracket for foot mounting, the TG L series base fits IEC flange motors. This series can be installed both horizontally and vertically – provided the connections are not facing downwards. These pumps can also have a reversed flow direction.

The TG L series also has a very wide selection of shaft seals – packing seal (gland packing) in 3 versions, single mechanical seal or double PTFE lip seal. Built-in relief valves are also available for this series of pumps. TG L pumps can be supplied in several versions depending on the pumping conditions – they are available in a standard clearance version for media with a temperature of 140°C and in a version with increased radial and axial clearances for media with an elevated temperature – up to 250°C. In addition, the offer includes models designed for explosion hazard zones (ATEX).

The TG L series pumps also include the RBS4 pump. It is similar to the TG L018 model in terms of performance and size. All wetted parts are made of AISI 316 stainless steel, and the rotor is mounted on a double ball bearing. Thanks to their robust construction, good self-priming properties and a wide choice of seal types, TG L pumps are used to transport a wide range of media, such as: animal feed, bitumen, coolants, fats, inks, isocyanates, molasses, oils, paints, polymers, resins, syrups and concrete admixtures.

  • High volumetric efficiency – the design of the TG L series pumps has small radial and axial clearances and an optimized rotor shape, which translates into less slippage.
  • 6 sizes – a range of models with a maximum capacity of up to 130 m3/h and a pressure of 25 bar, which allows the pump to be adapted to specific customer requirements.
  • Better priming – oversized ports for better performance, located above the pump centerline. This translates into a lower required NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head).
  • Designed for low or high viscosity media – undisturbed flow thanks to the optimized tooth profile on the active gear.
  • Extended service life – thoughtful design with large bearing diameters, rotors made of solid alloy bars and hardened internal components. Extended seal life is ensured by a drain channel that drains fluid from the seal area to the suction side.
  • Shorter maintenance downtime – pumps and motors flange-mounted to bases, ensuring proper alignment of the pump and drive shaft. In addition, the TG L series has compact and easy-to-install components.
  • Explosion-proof design – compliant with ATEX Directive, category II 2G.
Operation principle

The pump contains two moving parts – a rotor and an idler gear. The idler gear is positioned eccentrically to the rotor and has fewer teeth. A crescent-shaped element on the pump cover acts as a seal between the suction and discharge ports, and also separates the liquid being transported in the pockets/chambers of the idler and rotor.

1. As the rotor shaft rotates, the volume of the chambers between the rotor and the idler gear increases, creating a vacuum. Liquid flows into the suction port.
2. Liquid flows through the pump, and the crescent-shaped element on the pump cover separates the fluid and acts as a seal between the suction and discharge ports. The meshing of the idler gear and rotor creates closed chambers containing the liquid, ensuring full volume control.
3. The pump in a fully primed state, discharging liquid through the discharge port.

Operation principle of relief valves

Operating principle of relief valves in SPX Johnson TG L pumps
The relief valves used in the TG L series are spring-loaded valves that open rapidly when the operating pressure rises to the set pressure value, which is pre-set by the spring. These valves limit the pressure difference (∆p) (or operating pressure) between the suction and discharge, not the maximum pressure in the system. If the liquid cannot escape when the discharge side of the pump is blocked, overpressure can cause serious damage to the pump. The relief valve provides an escape route, directing the media back to the suction side after a certain pressure level is reached. An open relief valve signals that the system is not working properly.
