SPX Johnson TopGear Bloc gear pumps are rotary positive displacement pumps with internal gearing. Their compact design allows for quick and easy installation in locations with limited space. TG Bloc gear pumps are made of modules, which allows for design diversity – various slide bearings, gear and shaft materials, as well as heating or cooling jackets and built-in overflow valves are available. Thanks to the well-thought-out design, manual alignment of the pump and motor is not required. In addition, the TG Bloc series pumps have a self-priming function – provided that there is enough liquid in the pump to fill the clearances and surfaces between the teeth.

They are designed for pumping low-viscosity and non-abrasive media in the food, chemical, bitumen, petrochemical, machine production and animal feed industries.

Product features

The TopGear (TG) series is a combination of solid construction with small clearances and a unique tooth profile on the driving gear. BLOC series pumps, belonging to the Top Gear family, are rotary positive displacement pumps with internal gear engagement. They operate at the direct rotational speed of the motor, offering an economical solution for pumping low-viscosity and non-abrasive media.

The compact design of this series allows for quick and easy installation in locations where available space is limited. TG Bloc pumps are made of cast iron and stainless steel and are assembled from modules, which allows for design diversity – various plain bearings, gear and shaft materials, and steam-powered heating or cooling jackets are available, as well as built-in overflow valves. Thanks to the thoughtful design, manual alignment of the pump and motor is not required. In addition, the TG Bloc series pumps have a self-priming function – provided that there is enough liquid in the pump to fill the clearances and surfaces between the teeth.

  • Proven hydraulics – TG Bloc pumps use proven TopGear series technology for high reliability.
  • High performance – series designed for low viscosity and non-abrasive fluids.
  • Compact design – suitable for limited spaces (e.g. for OEM installations).
  • Easy maintenance – possibility of disassembly and access to the pump both from the front and from the rear.
  • Mechanical seal – a single mechanical seal provides very good shaft sealing.
  • Extended lifespan – excellent pump and motor alignment thanks to thoughtful design.
  • High level of interchangeability with the TopGear series – easier servicing and fewer spare parts in stock.
Operation principle

Operating principle of SPX Johnson TopGear gear pumps

The rotor and pinion rotate and mesh with each other. This creates sealed chambers with variable volume, resulting in a vacuum that forces the medium to flow into these spaces. The liquid is transported in the chambers from the suction side to the discharge side. The spaces are separated from each other by an element that prevents the liquid from returning to the suction side. The medium is pumped to the discharge side as a result of the reduction in the volume of the interdental spaces.

Modular design
SPX Johnson TG Bloc gear pump body. Pump housing with integrated feet and in-line connections

The pump housing can remain installed in the piping system during inspection and repair of rotors and shaft seal.

Front access module in SPX Johnson TG Bloc gear pumps. Front Access Module

The entire front (pinion, cover and pinion shaft) can be removed for easy internal inspection and repair.

Rear access module in SPX Johnson TG Bloc gear pumps. Back access module

The shaft rotor, rotor bearing intermediate body, shaft seal and bearing bracket can be removed for easy inspection, repair and shaft seal replacement.

Relief valve mounted in SPX Johnson TG Bloc gear pumps. Top-mounted overflow valve

The pre-assembled and adjusted overpressure relief valve can be disassembled for inspection, repair, and if it is necessary to change the direction of rotation or pressure.

Options and accessories

Heating mantles

  • designed for use with saturated steam or water vapor
  • for mounting on the pump cover or on the overflow valve,
  • heats the pump body, internal components, and relief valve body.
  • enables safe pump start-up and shut-down
  • allows the pump to be brought to the correct temperature when the liquid solidifies or is too viscous.
  • the possibility of adding a jacket cover later without having to replace the main pump parts.

Safety valves

  • protects the pump and installation against excessive overpressure by limiting the pressure difference between the suction and discharge sides
  • available in single and double versions (2 single valves mounted opposite each other protect both flow directions through the pump).
  • optionally available with heating.
Operating principle of pressure relief valves

The operating principle of pressure relief valves in SPX Johnson TopGear gear pumps

The relief valves used in the TG Bloc series are spring-loaded valves that open abruptly when the operating pressure rises to the set pressure value for which the spring is pre-set. These valves limit the differential pressure (∆p) (or operating pressure) between suction and discharge, not the maximum pressure in the system. If the liquid cannot escape when the discharge side of the pump is blocked, overpressure can cause serious damage to the pump. The relief valve provides an escape route by directing the media back to the suction side once a certain pressure level is reached. An open relief valve signals that the system is not operating correctly.
